1. Wash Dishes By Hand
I became aware of how strong detergents are when I ran just the rinse cycle on my dishwasher. To my surprise, the water foamed up even though I didn’t add soap. It took three rinses to get all the suds out. That means quite a bit of dishwasher fluid was still on my dishes all the times I only rinsed them once. Yikes!
I did some research and found a recent Swedish study that followed more than 1,000 kids between the ages of 7 and 8. They found that kids who grew up in households using a dishwasher were more likely to develop allergies, asthma and eczema. 38% of kids who grew up with parents using dishwasher fluid had eczema, compared to 23% of a hand-washed households.
If washing dishes by hand isn’t an option, at least use a natural dishwasher fluid.
2. Don’t Cover Your Clothes in Chemicals
Cheap laundry detergents are loaded with chemicals, fragrances and dyes. None of these are good for your skin. Take a minute to think of how much your skin contacts your clothes and bed sheets.
Some of these ingredients are shown to disrupt your skin’s PH balance, cause skin irritation, endocrine disruptors and some are even carcinogenic (cancer causing) in animal studies. Dryer sheets are also shown to show skin irritation so toss them out too.
Again, switch to a natural detergent. I wash my clothes in distilled white vinegar.

3. Ditch the Cheap Shampoo
The commercials say they will give you thick, vibrant hair and smell oh so wonderful. First- the models in the commercials aren’t using those shampoos. Second- they are loaded with chemicals, fragrances and dyes.
Cheap shampoos strip your hair down with alcohol then cover the strands with silicone to make them feel soft, but actually ruin the hair. Some of the chemicals found in shampoo are also shown to harm your skin’s PH, cause skin irritation, hormone disruption, damage hair and are possibly carcinogenic. As you rinse, these chemicals fall down your entire body.
I’ve helped dozens of customers who could not get rid of their eczema until they switch to a natural, PH balanced shampoo and conditioner.
4. Cleaning Supplies
Alcohol, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, formaldehyde, ammonia… All found in various cleaning products. Using it once might not cause a reaction, but after continued use these chemicals can build up throughout your house.
Chemicals in cleaning products can cause or irritate asthma, allergies, eczema and other autoimmune disorders. Even if you aren’t in direct contact with the chemicals, they can find their way onto your skin in various ways.
Do your best to switch to natural cleaning solutions. There are a variety of simple ways to clean using either lemon juice, baking soda, white vinegar or Castile soap.
Tip: Always use gloves when cleaning to protect your skin’s PH balance.
5. Use Sulfate-Free, PH Balanced Soaps
If you have damaged skin, you want to keep it clean to avoid infection. What you DON’T want to do is strip away all the oils, nutrients and moisture from it. That’s exactly what you do when you use a harsh soap.
Our skin is around 5.5 PH, while most soaps are 8-10 PH. To put it in perspective, household bleach is 12 PH. Harming this acidic layer can ruin your skin’s immune system and ability to heal.
On top of that, 9 out of 10 soaps that foam use sulfates and other chemicals to produce suds. Chemicals commonly found in soaps are linked to hormone disruption, skin irritation, cancer, antibiotic resistance and weakened skin.
